Section 4: First-Aid Measures

General Overview: This material is an aspiration hazard and defats the skin. Breathing vapors of high concentrations may cause CNS depression.

• EYE CONTACT: Slightly irritating but does not injure eye tissue. Flush eyes with large amounts of water until irritation subsides. If irritation persists, get medical attention.
• SKIN CONTACT: Low order of toxicity. Frequent or prolonged contact may irritate and cause dermatitis. Flush with large amounts of water; use soap if available. Remove grossly contaminated clothing, including shoes, and launder before reuse.
• INHALATION: High vapor/aerosol concentrations (>100 ppm) irritate eyes and respiratory tract, causing headaches, dizziness, anesthesia, drowsiness, unconsciousness, or central nervous system effects. Immediately remove affected victim from exposure using proper respiratory protection. Administer artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. Keep at rest and seek prompt medical attention.
• INGESTION: Small amounts aspirated into the respiratory system during ingestion or vomiting may cause mild to severe pulmonary injury. DO NOT induce vomiting. Keep at rest and obtain prompt medical attention.

Special Precautions & Personal Protection:

• Special Precautions: Health studies have shown that many hydrocarbons pose potential human health risks. As a precaution, exposure to liquids, vapors, mists, or fumes should be minimized.
• Personal Protection: For open systems where contact is likely, wear safety glasses with side shields, long sleeves, and chemical-resistant gloves. Use NIOSH/MSHA-approved respirators where air concentrations exceed exposure limits.
• Ventilation: Mechanical dilution ventilation is recommended whenever used in a confined space, heated above ambient temperatures, or agitated.

Section 5: Fire-Fighting Measures

• Fire and Explosion Hazards: Releases flammable vapors well below ambient temperatures; readily forms flammable mixtures with air. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel long distances along the ground to ignition sources and flash back. Alkaline/chlorine gas mixtures have produced explosions.
• Extinguishing Media: Dry Chemical, CO2, Halogenated Extinguishing Agent. Stop Gas Flow.
• Special Firefighting Procedures: Gas fires should not be extinguished unless gas flow can be stopped immediately. Cool exposed surfaces and containers with water spray to prevent overheating, flashbacks, or explosions. Use self-contained breathing apparatus when exposure to toxic gases is possible. Avoid spraying water directly into storage containers due to danger of boiling over.

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

• Steps to take if material is released or container punctured: Clean up area by mopping or with absorbent materials and place in a closed container for disposal. Consult Federal, State, and local disposal authorities.
• Waste Disposal Method: Empty depressurized containers cannot be reused. Pressurized or liquid-containing cans must be disposed of in a permitted waste management facility in accordance with local regulations.

• Ventilation Requirement: Use adequate level exhaust ventilation. Local exhaust recommended to control employee exposure. Special ventilation required where carbon monoxide may be generated.
• Personal Protective Equipment: Wear chemical goggles/face shield, impervious gloves (polyfluorinated polyethylene suggested), standard work clothing, and work shoes. Discard contaminated shoes/gloves that cannot be decontaminated.
